Doctoral Student in Material Science: Predictive Design of 3D-Shaped Pulp Fibre Products
Develop predictive design rules for sustainable 3D-formed pulp fibre products to replace fossil-based plastics.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in materials science or mechanical engineering and a strong interest in sustainable manufacturing and fibre technology.
Overview
This doctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology focuses on transforming fibre-based manufacturing from trial-and-error methods to a predictive design framework. The successful candidate will join the FibRe Centre for Lignocellulose-based Thermoplastics to investigate how fibre properties and processing conditions influence the formability of lignocellulosic materials. By combining experimental research, mechanical analysis, and multiscale characterisation, the project aims to create sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. The role involves active participation in an interdisciplinary environment, collaboration with industrial partners, and potential teaching duties.
What you'll do
- Conduct research on the formability of lignocellulosic materials into complex 3D products.
- Combine experimental studies, multiscale characterisation, and data analysis to establish predictive design principles.
- Develop original scientific ideas and communicate findings through international journal publications and conference presentations.
- Collaborate with academic researchers and industrial partners within the FibRe Centre.
- Participate in advanced-level doctoral courses within the Chalmers graduate education system.
- Perform departmental duties, including undergraduate teaching, for up to 20% of the contract time.
