MSc Earth, Life and Climate
An interdisciplinary master’s programme exploring climate, sedimentary systems, and biodiversity dynamics through fieldwork, modelling, and laboratory research.
Best for:Best for students with a bachelor’s in earth sciences, biology, geology, or related fields who are passionate about climate dynamics, sedimentology, and interdisciplinary environmental research.
Overview
This master’s programme at Utrecht University integrates earth sciences, biology, and climate studies to investigate past, present, and future environmental processes. Students examine sedimentary systems, biodiversity evolution, and climate change impacts on natural environments like soils, oceans, and wetlands. The curriculum combines fieldwork, advanced modelling techniques, and laboratory experiments across disciplines such as palaeontology, geochemistry, hydrology, and palaeoceanography. Graduates gain expertise in climate reconstruction, biogeochemical analysis, and interdisciplinary research methods, preparing them for careers in applied or fundamental research.
What you'll do
- Conduct fieldwork and laboratory experiments to collect and analyse sedimentary, biological, and geochemical samples.
- Apply state-of-the-art modelling techniques to reconstruct past climates and environmental conditions.
- Develop and execute an independent research project under faculty supervision, contributing to interdisciplinary climate science.
- Participate in traineeships or internships with research institutions or industry partners to gain applied research experience.
- Collaborate with peers across disciplines to integrate findings from geology, biology, and climate studies.
- Present research findings at conferences, seminars, and workshops to foster academic discourse.
