EPSRC FIBE3 CDT PhD Studentship in Low Carbon Repair Materials
Develop sustainable, low carbon cementitious repair materials for future infrastructure at the University of Cambridge.
Best for:Best for civil engineering graduates with a strong interest in sustainable construction materials and experimental testing.
Overview
This four-year MRes/PhD studentship is offered through the Cambridge EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment (FIBE3 CDT) in collaboration with industry partner M Group. The project focuses on creating advanced, low-carbon cementitious repair materials and tailored admixtures to extend the lifecycle of existing infrastructure assets and reduce construction emissions. The candidate will combine advanced material characterization, mix design, modelling, and durability testing to deliver resilient infrastructure solutions. The student will be expected to engage closely with industrial case studies and conduct rigorous experimental and analytical research.
What you'll do
- Conduct advanced material characterization and mix design development for low-carbon cementitious repair materials
- Perform coupled thermodynamic and reactive transport modelling alongside accelerated aging tests
- Execute mechanical and durability testing on grouts, mortars, and concrete formulations
- Collaborate with industry partner M Group to utilize real-world infrastructure repair case studies
- Validate findings through potential large-scale trials and performance assessments
- Prepare research findings for publication in academic journals and presentation at conferences
- Complete the integrated MRes and PhD coursework and milestones within the four-year timeframe
