Research Associate in Cardiovascular Genomics and Clinical Epidemiology
Develop an independent research programme in cardiovascular genomics using a large-scale cohort dataset with mentorship from leading investigators.
Best for:Best for researchers with a PhD in genomics, epidemiology, or a related biomedical field, seeking to transition towards independent research with a focus on cardiovascular health and genetic analysis.
Overview
This Research Associate position at the University of Leicester focuses on advancing cardiovascular genomics and clinical epidemiology within the British Heart Foundation Leicester Centre of Research Excellence (BHF CRE). The role involves contributing to the GENVASC study—a prospective cohort of over 44,000 individuals with extensive follow-up data and genome-wide genotyping—to uncover genetic influences on cardiovascular risk, identify therapeutic targets, and develop predictive tools. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment spanning genomics, bioinformatics, and translational science, with mentorship from Professor Sir Nilesh Samani and other leading investigators. The position offers protected research time, funding, and opportunities to build towards research independence through grant applications.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent research in cardiovascular genomics and clinical epidemiology using the GENVASC cohort dataset, which includes over 44,000 individuals with a decade of linked follow-up data and genome-wide genotyping.
- Develop and implement analytical approaches to identify genetic influences on cardiovascular risk, therapeutic targets, and predictive tools.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams spanning genomics, clinical imaging, biomarkers, multi-omics, and molecular biology to advance translational research.
- Contribute to the wider academic life of the university, including engagement with internal and external partners aligned with its strategic goals.
- Develop new research techniques and ideas, with the ambition to build towards research independence through fellowship and grant applications.
- Engage in professional development activities and contribute to an inclusive research culture.
