PhD Position in Systems Biology: Trout Cardiac Performance and Metabolism
Investigate how genetics and diet influence rainbow trout cardiac performance and metabolism in a 4-year PhD role.
Best for:Best for biology or life science graduates with an interest in animal physiology, systems biology, and experimental research.
Overview
The Laboratory of Systems Biology at Tallinn University of Technology invites applications for a four-year doctoral position examining the impact of genetics and diet on rainbow trout cardiac function. Working alongside an interdisciplinary research team, the candidate will employ physiological and biochemical techniques—including echocardiography, electrocardiography, and respirometry—to assess heart performance and energy metabolism. The project aims to generate evidence-based guidelines for improving the robustness of farmed fish. The successful applicant will independently plan experiments, analyze complex datasets, and contribute to scientific publications while participating in a shared animal-care rota.
What you'll do
- Plan and conduct physiological and biochemical experiments independently while coordinating shared laboratory resources.
- Assess cardiac performance and electrical activity using echocardiography and electrocardiography.
- Investigate cellular respiration and marker enzyme activities via respirometry and spectrophotometric assays.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results in collaboration with team members studying cardiac morphology.
- Prepare scientific manuscripts for publication and present findings at academic conferences.
- Contribute to the supervision of junior students.
- Participate in routine fish husbandry and animal care through a shared weekend rota.
