Postdoctoral Researcher in Aerosol Emissions from Streams
Investigate whether boreal streams act as an overlooked source of atmospheric aerosols and study their emission mechanisms.
Best for:Best for environmental engineers, atmospheric scientists, or aquatic researchers with experience in aerosol measurements and field-based biogeochemical studies.
Overview
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position within the Department of Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå. The successful candidate will investigate the hypothesis that natural streams emit aerosols to the atmosphere, identifying the driving mechanisms and environmental controls behind these emissions. Key responsibilities include developing flux chambers, conducting field and laboratory experiments, measuring physicochemical properties, and analyzing aerosol fluxes. The role offers an opportunity to advance research at the intersection of aquatic and atmospheric sciences while working independently and collaboratively.
What you'll do
- Develop and deploy a custom flux chamber to capture aerosols emitted from stream surfaces in controlled and natural settings.
- Quantify aerosol fluxes using online particle counters and air filtration methods.
- Collect water samples and measure physicochemical water and bubble properties.
- Perform laboratory analyses of ice-nucleating particles using droplet freezing assays or related techniques.
- Design and execute field studies in natural boreal streams alongside controlled laboratory experiments.
- Contribute to scientific data analysis, manuscript preparation, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in atmospheric sciences, aquatic sciences, physics, environmental engineering, or a related discipline
Language: English; excellent written and spoken proficiency
Instruction: English
Publications: A track record of scientific writing and publishing in peer-reviewed journals is required.
- Demonstrated experience in measurements of aerosols, suspended particles, or air-water mass exchange
- Hands-on experience conducting laboratory or fieldwork in aquatic or atmospheric systems
- Proven track record of scientific writing and publishing in peer-reviewed journals
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
- Applicants must hold a doctoral degree that is at most three years old at the time of appointment.
