Overview

The Master of Science in Space Systems at the University of Oslo offers a rigorous two-year programme focused on the design, construction, and operation of satellites and space probes. Students gain expertise in satellite mechanics, orbit dynamics, payload design, and ground-based testing, while addressing societal needs like environmental monitoring, security, and planetary exploration. The programme is taught at the Department of Technology Systems in Kjeller, a hub for space research and industry, with collaborations including the Center for Space Sensors and Systems (CENSSS). Students engage in hands-on projects, from developing small satellites for Earth observation to contributing to Mars geology research via the RIMFAX radar on NASA’s Perseverance rover. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary problem-solving, commercial innovation in space technology, and practical experience in a makerspace environment.
