PhD position: Nano Photonics with Fibre Cavities
Join an interdisciplinary project developing micron-scale fibre cavities for quantum communications and high-speed telecommunications.
Best for:Best for physics or engineering graduates with a strong interest in experimental optics, laser technology, and quantum communications.
Overview
This PhD position is a collaborative research opportunity between the Photonic Ultrafast Systems Group and the Nano-Photonics Group. The project focuses on developing micron-scale fibre cavities with designer nano-structured mirror profiles using femtosecond laser ablation. The successful candidate will work on two primary applications: creating a high-repetition rate pulsed laser for optical telecommunications and a single-photon source for quantum technology. The role involves experimental work across two sites, the University of Basel and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. You will join the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) PhD school, benefiting from a highly collaborative environment and comprehensive training.
What you'll do
- Generate and characterize sub-micron size Bessel beams.
- Conduct nano-machining trials on glass samples using femtosecond pulsed lasers.
- Optimize laser parameters to achieve high-quality mirror templates.
- Design and construct open micro-cavities with nano-machined fibres for quantum communication applications.
- Develop micro-cavity femtosecond lasers for high-data-rate telecommunications.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across two research sites.
