PhD research project: Beyond the boundaries of phosphate desorption
Uncovering the surface chemistry and mechanisms behind phosphate-iron (hydr)oxide sorption and regeneration.
Best for:Best for master graduates in chemistry or chemical engineering with a strong background in surface chemistry and materials characterization.
Overview
This PhD project investigates the fundamental surface chemistry mechanisms governing phosphate adsorption and desorption on iron (hydr)oxides to improve wastewater resource recovery. Hosted at Wetsus in collaboration with Delft University of Technology, the research combines materials science, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering. The candidate will design innovative experiments, develop nanostructured adsorbents, and employ advanced analytical characterization techniques. The successful applicant will work within an interdisciplinary environment alongside industrial partners in the Phosphate Recovery Theme.
What you'll do
- Explore the interface between material science, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, and environmental science.
- Investigate fundamental mechanisms governing the surface chemistry of phosphate adsorption and desorption on iron (hydr)oxides.
- Design innovative experiments and develop effective nanostructured adsorbents using creative, outside-the-box thinking.
- Operate advanced liquid-phase analytical techniques such as IC, ICP-OES, and TOC.
- Perform material characterization using techniques including Mössbauer spectroscopy, SEM-EDX, TEM, FTIR, and XRD.
- Collaborate and exchange knowledge with industrial partners within the Wetsus Phosphate Recovery Theme.
