PhD Position in Foil Drone for Autonomous Maritime Surveillance
Advance wind-powered aerial and submerged hydrofoil drones for indefinite ocean monitoring at TU Delft.
Best for:Best for aerospace and robotics graduates with strong background in flight dynamics, control systems, and numerical simulation.
Overview
Delft University of Technology is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to spearhead advanced research on the FoilDrone system within the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. The project aims to bridge the gap between low-endurance airborne drones and slow surface vessels by combining a VTOL sailplane with a submerged hydrofoil via a tether. The successful applicant will develop simulation models, optimize aerodynamic and hydrodynamic efficiencies, conduct experimental validation, and contribute to academic publishing. The position offers a multi-year doctoral contract in an inspiring international research environment with comprehensive employment benefits.
What you'll do
- Develop and expand multi-body dynamics simulation models linking aerial vehicles to submerged hydrofoils through a flexible tether.
- Refine independent control algorithms to ensure stability across transit, deployment, sailing, and recovery phases.
- Investigate complex aerodynamic and hydrodynamic interactions across varying sea states and wind disturbances.
- Design and execute physical experiments including wind-tunnel tests, tow-tank assessments, and open-water flight trials.
- Publish high-impact scientific papers in leading international journals and present findings at global conferences.
- Assist in supervising Bachelor's and Master's student thesis projects.
