PhD Position in Modeling and Optimization of Fluid-Dynamical Systems
Develop data-driven and physics-informed models for liquid metal flow in continuous casting plants at TU Wien.
Best for:Best for electrical or control engineering graduates with strong backgrounds in mathematical modeling, fluid dynamics, and optimization.
Overview
The Automation and Control Institute (ACIN) at TU Wien invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focusing on the modeling, monitoring, and optimization of fluid-dynamical systems. Working within the Complex Dynamical Systems Group and in collaboration with an industrial partner, the successful candidate will research flow behavior, parameter estimation, and real-time adaptive soft-sensing of liquid metal. The role involves developing advanced control-oriented models, conducting simulations, and validating methodologies on laboratory and industrial setups. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master's degree and demonstrate strong technical expertise in systems theory, automation, or related engineering fields.
What you'll do
- Develop data-driven and physics-informed models for gas-laden liquid metal flows in continuous casting plants.
- Identify dynamical models and perform model-order reduction for complex fluid-dynamical systems.
- Design optimizations for flow channels to improve industrial casting processes.
- Implement real-time adaptive and learning-based soft-sensing algorithms to estimate unmeasured quantities.
- Utilize sensor-fusion techniques to combine multiple measurement signals effectively.
- Validate developed methods through rigorous simulations, laboratory models, and industrial continuous casters.
