Postdoctoral Researcher in Arctic Sea-Ice and Initialized Climate Prediction
Investigate Arctic sea‑ice predictability using AI‑enhanced climate models.
Best for:Best for early‑career climate scientists with expertise in sea‑ice processes, climate modeling and machine learning.
Overview
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is offering a four‑year, full‑time postdoctoral position within its Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF). The role focuses on understanding how Arctic sea‑ice predictability changes in a warming climate and on developing AI‑driven methods to improve seasonal to multi‑annual forecasts. The researcher will work on the IcyAlert project, which aims to predict ice‑free Arctic summers using global climate models, causal analysis and machine learning. Collaboration will occur with partners from the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium and the Technical University of Denmark, while being part of DMI's Global Climate unit. Successful candidates are expected to contribute to scientific publications and advance the institute's climate‑prediction capabilities.
What you'll do
- Investigate how Arctic sea‑ice predictability evolves under climate warming.
- Develop and apply AI‑enhanced methods to improve seasonal to multi‑annual sea‑ice forecasts.
- Integrate global climate models with causal analysis and machine‑learning techniques.
- Collaborate with partner institutions (RMI, DTU) to advance the IcyAlert project.
- Analyse remote‑sensing data and model outputs to assess ice‑free summer scenarios.
- Publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences.
