Doctoral Position in Evolutionary Genomics (Experimental/Computational)
Join a leading evolutionary genomics group to investigate the molecular evolution of organs in vertebrates using cutting-edge experimental and computational methods.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in genomics, bioinformatics, or molecular biology who are eager to bridge experimental and computational research.
Overview
The evolutionary genomics group led by Henrik Kaessmann at Heidelberg University is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join their research team. The lab focuses on the origins and molecular evolution of organs in mammals and other vertebrates, with a specific emphasis on gene expression and regulatory mechanisms. Successful applicants will work on projects that integrate experimental data generation—such as long-read spatial transcriptomics—with advanced computational and deep-learning analyses. The position offers a collaborative, international environment within the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) in Heidelberg. Candidates will have the opportunity to tailor their research focus based on their individual expertise and interests.
What you'll do
- Develop and execute research projects focused on the evolution of gene expression and regulatory mechanisms.
- Generate high-quality experimental datasets using cutting-edge techniques such as long-read spatial transcriptomics.
- Perform advanced computational and bioinformatics analyses, including the application of deep learning models.
- Collaborate within small, interdisciplinary teams of experimental and computational researchers.
- Contribute to the functional characterization of evolutionary changes using organoid or mouse models.
- Participate in the vibrant, international research community at the ZMBH and the broader Heidelberg research hub.
