Postdoctoral Researcher: Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics Modelling
Develop advanced soil carbon modelling to improve agricultural sustainability and climate resilience.
Best for:Best for postdoctoral researchers with expertise in soil science, biogeochemical modelling, and programming (R/Python), seeking to advance agricultural sustainability through computational approaches.
Overview
This postdoctoral position at INRAE’s Joint Research Unit SolAE in Montpellier, France, focuses on enhancing the AMG model—a tool simulating soil organic carbon dynamics in response to agricultural practices and environmental conditions. The successful candidate will refine the model’s ability to account for vertical soil carbon stratification and priming effects, evaluate performance improvements, and publish findings. The work integrates agronomy, biogeochemistry, and computational modelling, contributing to sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation. The project leverages long-term experimental datasets and collaborative research networks, offering a multidisciplinary environment for impactful scientific contributions.
What you'll do
- Develop and refine the AMG model to incorporate vertical stratification of soil carbon inputs and stocks, including priming effects.
- Assess the impact of model modifications on performance using long-term experimental datasets from the AMG-LAB project.
- Evaluate different methods for estimating crop-related carbon inputs and initializing model pools.
- Publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals, presenting the updated model and its evaluation.
- Collaborate with a consortium of agronomic research organizations to integrate improvements into broader soil science frameworks.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in Agronomy, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Biogeochemistry, or a related field
Language: English (proficiency required for scientific communication and collaboration)
Instruction: French (work environment) and English (scientific publications)
Publications: One scientific paper presenting the new model version and its evaluation
- Experience in using, evaluating, or calibrating computational models (e.g., soil carbon models)
- Proficiency in R programming for data processing and analysis
- Familiarity with handling large and varied datasets
- Knowledge of biogeochemical cycles and soil organic matter dynamics
- Experience with model calibration and validation techniques
- No specific nationality restrictions mentioned
- No residency or age limits specified
