PhD in Optically Controlled Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuits
Explore cutting-edge RF-to-millimetrewave integrated circuits using optically induced plasmas in silicon for scalable, high-performance applications.
Best for:Best for electronics engineering graduates with expertise in RF/microwave circuits, photonics, or semiconductor device fabrication, seeking hands-on research in cutting-edge integrated circuit technology.
Overview
This PhD project at the University of Bristol focuses on advancing a novel technology for radio-frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) by leveraging optically induced plasmas in silicon. The research aims to develop scalable packaging solutions for photo-conductive switches, attenuators, and phase shifters, combining low-cost lasers with in-house fabricated silicon circuits. The project involves electromagnetic modelling, cleanroom fabrication, and on-wafer probe testing, building upon over a decade of prior work at Bristol. The successful candidate will join Professor Martin Cryan’s group and collaborate within a vibrant research environment of around 50 academics, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students, with access to state-of-the-art facilities.
What you'll do
- Develop and optimize scalable packaging solutions for optically controlled RFICs using photo-conductive switches.
- Conduct electromagnetic modelling to simulate and analyze circuit performance across broadband frequencies (up to 250 GHz).
- Perform cleanroom fabrication of silicon-based integrated circuits in-house.
- Carry out on-wafer probe testing to evaluate the performance of fabricated devices under various conditions.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary research group to advance the technology’s applications in high-power and linear RF systems.
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
