PhD Position in Quality Monitoring in Strip Processing Lines
Develop advanced mathematical and sensor models for quality monitoring in industrial steel strip processing.
Best for:Best for control engineers and applied mathematicians with a background in dynamic system modeling and process monitoring.
Overview
TU Wien's Automation and Control Institute (ACIN) invites applications for a PhD position focusing on quality monitoring in continuous strip processing lines. Working within the Complex Dynamical Systems Group and in close collaboration with an industrial partner, the successful candidate will design new methods to estimate state trajectories, track material microstructures, and apply soft sensing techniques. The role combines foundational mathematical process modeling with practical realization and validation on real industrial lines. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master's degree and demonstrate strong academic capability in systems theory, control, or electrical engineering.
What you'll do
- Develop mathematical process models for plant temperatures, material dilation, and microstructures in steel strip production.
- Design soft sensing algorithms utilizing all available measurement signals for accurate state estimation.
- Implement in-line monitoring techniques for tracking phase fractions during manufacturing.
- Validate and test developed methods on actual industrial strip processing lines in collaboration with industrial partners.
- Contribute to academic publishing, dissemination of research findings, and scientific reporting.
