Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Mitochondrial Biology
Join the CONTROL-MITO team to develop chemical-genetic toolkits for engineering mitochondrial DNA.
Best for:Best for postdoctoral researchers with a PhD in mitochondrial or cell biology and hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture and assay development.
Overview
The CRUK Scotland Institute is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the CONTROL-MITO project within the ARIA-funded Precision Mitochondria programme. Based in Glasgow, the researcher will act as the team's mitochondrial biologist, testing novel chemical-genetic tools and leading the mitochondrial phenotyping of bioengineered human cell lines. The position involves collaborating with multidisciplinary academic and industry partners across the UK to advance programmable physiology. Responsibilities include assessing mitochondrial bioenergetics, monitoring genome maintenance, and contributing to consortium meetings and scientific publications.
What you'll do
- Measure the impact of chemical probes on mitochondrial bioenergetics and metabolism using respirometry and LC-MS.
- Investigate mitochondrial morphology, function, and quality control in bioengineered cells via fluorescence confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and proteomics.
- Monitor mitochondrial genome maintenance and expression in bioengineered cell lines.
- Collaborate with core facilities including Metabolomics, Advanced Imaging, and Proteomics.
- Engage with multidisciplinary teams to drive the Precision Mitochondria programme forward.
- Present findings at consortium and ARIA meetings, prepare manuscripts for publication, and help supervise junior researchers and students.
