PhD Student in Soft Matter for Project PlasticPhase (MSCA COFUND)
Join the PRISM programme to investigate the impact of micro- and nanoplastics on protein aggregation and neurodegenerative disease pathways.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in biophysics, soft matter, or physical chemistry interested in environmental health and protein aggregation.
Overview
The PRISM programme at PSL University is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the intersection of soft matter physics and environmental health. The successful candidate will join the Laboratory CPCV to study how micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) modulate liquid-liquid phase separation and protein aggregation. By constructing synthetic model condensates and utilizing advanced biophysical techniques, the researcher will explore the molecular mechanisms linking plastic pollution to neurodegenerative conditions. This interdisciplinary project combines chemistry, biophysics, and biology to provide a predictive framework for understanding environmental health risks. The position includes comprehensive training in sustainability, innovation, and career development as part of the MSCA COFUND initiative.
What you'll do
- Design and construct synthetic model condensates using engineered protein scaffolds.
- Generate a tunable library of micro- and nanoplastics with controlled physical and chemical properties.
- Perform in vitro experiments to quantify the influence of MNP characteristics on phase separation and nucleation rates.
- Conduct in cellulo studies using live-cell imaging and FRAP to assess viscosity and molecular exchange rates.
- Analyze viscoelastic changes in the cytoplasm using microrheology techniques.
- Collaborate with international partners and intersectoral stakeholders to advance research objectives.
- Participate in PRISM programme training courses, secondments, and career development activities.
