15 PhD Positions in the MSCA Doctoral Network ORFeus: Decoding the Dark Proteome
Join a pan-European consortium to uncover and characterize microproteins from small open reading frames for cancer, immunotherapy, and drug discovery.
Best for:Best for master’s graduates in molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational biology, immunology, or related fields with a passion for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of genomics, proteomics, and cancer biology.
Overview
The MSCA Doctoral Network ORFeus offers 15 PhD positions across eight European countries to investigate the 'dark proteome'—microproteins encoded by small open reading frames (smORFs) previously overlooked. These proteins play critical roles in cellular regulation, disease, and immunity but remain largely uncharacterized. The network combines cutting-edge techniques like ribosome profiling, single-cell sequencing, mass spectrometry, and machine learning to identify, study, and apply these microproteins in cancer diagnostics, immunotherapy, and drug development. Each PhD candidate will conduct research at a host institution, collaborate with industry partners, and participate in a shared training program, including workshops, conferences, and skill development in research integrity and science communication.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent research on a specific project within the ORFeus network, focusing on the discovery and characterization of microproteins from smORFs.
- Collaborate with industry partners through a three-month secondment to apply research findings in real-world settings.
- Participate in a shared training program, including network schools, workshops, and international conferences.
- Develop transferable skills such as research integrity, intellectual property management, and science communication.
- Present research findings at international conferences and contribute to collaborative publications.
- Work under dual supervision from an academic and an industry advisor, ensuring interdisciplinary knowledge exchange.
