PhD Studentship: Breaking Code of Virus-like Gene Transfer Agents
Investigate the biology of virus-like gene transfer agents to uncover mechanisms of genetic domestication and synthetic engineering.
Best for:Best for biology graduates with a strong interest in microbiology, molecular genetics, and multidisciplinary research.
Overview
This four-year PhD studentship at the John Innes Centre, University of East Anglia, investigates the fundamental biology and domestication of Gene Transfer Agents (GTAs) in bacteria. Working under the supervision of Prof. Tung Le, the successful candidate will use multidisciplinary approaches including molecular microbiology, fluorescence microscopy, and structural biology to study how these virus-like particles facilitate horizontal gene transfer and antimicrobial resistance. The project aims to understand the lifecycle of GTAs and lay the groundwork for engineering synthetic particles for therapeutic or biotechnological applications. Applicants are expected to hold a strong background in biological sciences and a keen interest in collaborative, multidisciplinary research.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental research to investigate the fundamental biology and lifecycle of Gene Transfer Agents (GTAs)
- Examine the domestication processes of genetic information and horizontal gene transfer in bacteria
- Utilize multidisciplinary techniques including molecular microbiology, fluorescence microscopy, omics, and protein-protein interaction studies
- Analyze and interpret experimental datasets to contribute to scientific publications and project deliverables
- Collaborate with research group members and external partners within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership
