PhD Studentship: From Brain to Germline: How Perception Affects Genetic Inheritance
Investigate how thermal perception by sensory neurons influences genetic inheritance and helps organisms adapt to climate change.
Best for:Best for biology or genetics graduates with an interest in evolutionary biology, molecular techniques, and bioinformatics.
Overview
This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia explores whether temperature-sensing neurons can alter the germline and prepare offspring for environmental stress before physical damage occurs. Working within the School of Biological Sciences, the successful candidate will use zebrafish models to study phenotypic changes, perform transcriptome sequencing, and conduct bioinformatic analyses. The project aims to uncover novel mechanisms of epigenetic inheritance and climate change adaptation. The student will receive comprehensive training in behavioural assays, molecular biology, and computational genomics through the ARIES doctoral training partnership.
What you'll do
- Design and execute behavioural conditioning and experimental protocols using zebrafish models.
- Measure phenotypic changes and perform multigenerational crosses to evaluate fitness traits under thermal stress.
- Collect biological samples for quantitative PCR, small-RNA, and transcriptome sequencing.
- Perform bioinformatic analyses and statistical processing on large-scale genomic datasets.
- Engage in scientific writing, present research findings at conferences, and participate in academic journal clubs.
