PhD Position in Advanced Correlative Microscopy and Isotopic Imaging
Develop advanced correlative microscopy and isotopic imaging to investigate lithium transport in next-generation Li-ion batteries.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in materials science or physics with an interest in advanced nano-analytics and battery research.
Overview
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) invites applications for a 4-year PhD position focusing on advanced correlative microscopy and isotopic imaging methodologies. The doctoral candidate will investigate lithium transport and interfacial processes in next-generation silicon-based Li-ion battery electrodes by developing high-throughput FIB-SIMS workflows and cryogenic preparation techniques. Working within an interdisciplinary environment, the researcher will collaborate with experienced scientists and international partners to produce quantitative 2D and 3D maps of lithium distribution. The successful applicant will enrol in the PhD programme at the University of Luxembourg while conducting research primarily at LIST in Belvaux.
What you'll do
- Develop and optimize advanced characterization approaches including cryogenic sample preparation and analysis.
- Contribute to the creation of high-throughput FIB-SIMS workflows and automated data-processing pipelines.
- Perform large-area, statistically representative 2D and 3D mapping of lithium isotopes and solid electrolyte interphase species.
- Design and execute experiments independently, interpreting results to feed into predictive battery models.
- Publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research outcomes at international conferences.
