PhD Position in Organometallic Chemistry
Join an ERC-funded project developing sustainable, earth-abundant transition-metal-catalysed reactions at the University of Copenhagen.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in organic chemistry or related fields with a strong interest in organometallic synthesis and sustainable catalysis.
Overview
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD position focused on organometallic chemistry and sustainable catalysis. Funded by the ERC Starting Grant Light-CAT, the research investigates novel homogeneous transition metal-catalysed reactions using earth-abundant metals like iron, cobalt, and nickel. The candidate will work within the research group led by Assistant Professor Craig S. Day, aiming to convert feedstock chemicals such as CO2 and biomass into high-value products. Applicants will undertake independent research, complete coursework, and participate in collaborative and international research environments.
What you'll do
- Execute an independent research project focusing on homogeneous transition metal-catalysed reactions
- Synthesize and characterize novel organometallic compounds and evaluate catalytic methodologies
- Complete PhD courses corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS credits
- Participate in active research environments, including a preferred research stay abroad
- Engage in teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
- Draft and publish scientific papers in high-impact academic journals
- Write and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation based on the research project
Requirements
Degree required: Master of Science (MSc) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) depending on the chosen PhD scheme
Degree offered: PhD
Language: English; professional working proficiency
Instruction: English
Publications: Relevant publications are considered an advantage but not strictly mandated for initial application
- Background in synthetic organic chemistry, methodology development, organometallic chemistry, mechanistic chemistry, or electrochemistry
- Proficiency in planning and executing chemical synthesis experiments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for mechanistic investigation
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and collaborative team environment
- Hold an educational qualification equivalent to a relevant Danish master's degree (for the 5+3 scheme) or a bachelor's degree (for the 3+5 integrated scheme)
