Doctoral Student in Battery Recycling
Join an EU Horizon-funded project to develop sustainable supercritical CO2 extraction technologies for critical battery materials.
Best for:Chemical engineering or materials science graduates with a strong interest in sustainable resource recovery and battery technology.
Overview
Chalmers University of Technology is seeking a highly motivated doctoral student to join the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to the European Horizon project 'ReBel', which focuses on developing sustainable, low-emission refining technologies for critical battery materials. The research will specifically investigate the extraction and recovery of elements like lithium, nickel, and cobalt from lithium-ion battery black mass using supercritical CO2. This role involves a combination of experimental process development, advanced materials characterization, and chemical process simulation within a multidisciplinary international team.
What you'll do
- Design and execute laboratory-scale experiments for battery recycling and resource recovery.
- Develop and optimize extraction processes for critical raw materials from lithium-ion battery black mass.
- Perform advanced materials characterization using techniques such as XRD and SEM.
- Analyze experimental data and communicate findings through scientific publications and conference presentations.
- Collaborate with academic and industrial partners within the EU Horizon consortium.
- Complete required doctoral-level coursework in chemistry and chemical engineering.
- Contribute to undergraduate teaching or other departmental duties for up to 20% of working hours.
Requirements
Degree required: Master's degree (120 credits) or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Metallurgical Engineering.
Degree offered: PhD
