Doctoral Student in Automatic Control with focus on Datacenter Control
Join an EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie network to research advanced control systems for edge datacentres and AI infrastructure.
Best for:Best for engineering graduates with strong control theory, machine learning, and optimization backgrounds interested in sustainable computing infrastructure.
Overview
Lund University invites applications for a 4-year fully-funded PhD position in Automatic Control focusing on datacenter control within the AEGIS European MSCA research and training network. The successful candidate will design innovative control layers that translate high-level intents into coordinated operational actions for physical assets like cooling systems, batteries, and compute hardware. Responsibilities include conducting independent research, authoring scientific papers, completing postgraduate courses, and participating in secondments at EPFL and Elisa. Candidates are expected to combine strong mathematical and control-engineering foundations with a passion for sustainable energy and computing infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Design an intent language capturing carbon, flexibility, and cost metrics for datacenter operations.
- Break down high-level operational intents into coordinated low-level control actions for physical assets.
- Develop and tune online power-performance and thermal models using classical control, AI, and reinforcement learning.
- Implement control software that translates intents into commands while measuring latency.
- Build practical control systems and validate them using real-world experimental data.
- Deploy a telemetry system reporting headroom without violating service-level limits in test scenarios.
- Author and publish research papers in peer-reviewed venues and present findings at international conferences.
- Complete 90 ECTS credits of postgraduate courses and participate in departmental teaching and duties for up to 20% of time.
