MSc in Biology
Interdisciplinary research-focused master’s programme in biodiversity, ecology, evolution, neurobiology, and molecular biology at a leading German university.
Best for:Best for biology graduates seeking a research-oriented master’s with flexibility to specialise in ecology, neurobiology, or molecular biology, and who thrive in hands-on lab and fieldwork environments.
Overview
The Master of Science in Biology at the University of Oldenburg is a research-intensive programme designed to equip students with advanced expertise in modern biological techniques and interdisciplinary approaches. Spanning four semesters, it offers specialisations in biodiversity, ecology, evolution, neurobiology, molecular biology, and genetics. Students engage in hands-on lab work, field research, and independent projects, preparing them for careers in academia, industry, or public research. The programme emphasises critical thinking, data analysis, and communication skills, with all courses taught in English and a mandatory thesis written in English. Small class sizes and close supervision foster personalised academic growth and collaboration with leading researchers.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent research projects in specialised biological fields such as biodiversity, ecology, evolution, neurobiology, or molecular biology.
- Develop and execute experimental designs, collect and analyse biological data using advanced techniques and tools.
- Write and defend a master’s thesis (30 CP) based on original research, demonstrating critical thinking and scientific rigor.
- Participate in block courses, seminars, and internships focused on specific biological topics, often with hands-on lab or fieldwork components.
- Collaborate with professors and peers in interdisciplinary projects, integrating knowledge from multiple biological and related fields.
- Present research findings orally and in writing, adhering to academic and ethical standards in both English and German.
- Develop practical skills in biological working techniques, data analysis, and scientific programming.
- Engage in structured, hypothesis-driven research and apply interdisciplinary thinking to complex biological questions.
